Pathology and women's health

Women's health is a fragile thing that needs to be taken care of at any age of life. It can be influenced by different factors such as age, medical and family history, environment and lifestyle. But also by ethnic origin, place of birth, society and culture . Women and girls can therefore be subject to many conditions that can be classified into 4 categories:

  • Gynecological disorders ( menstrual cycle irregularities, menopause, premature ovarian failure (POF), endometriosis, ovarian cysts, uterine fibroids, vaginitis and vulvodynia
  • Pregnancy-related problems ( high blood pressure, gestational diabetes, preeclampsia, pregnancy loss (miscarriage or stillbirth), breastfeeding and postpartum depression)
  • The different cancers (ovarian, cervical, etc.)
  • Psychological problems ( depression, burnout, self-harm, etc.)

Women's health is an important topic in our current society that should not be neglected. Let's see this through some results.

Although women live on average longer than men, during their lives they have greater recourse to medical care, particularly for reproductive health. Among women, the leading cause of death is cardiovascular disease. In addition, among cancers, cervical and breast cancer are the most common and lung cancer is the deadliest . In 2015, worldwide it was recorded that the second leading cause of death among women aged 15 to 29 was self-harm, including suicide. Today, approximately 830 women die each day from causes related to pregnancy and childbirth that can be prevented. However, the majority of people carrying HIV are young women aged 15 to 24.

In newborns, prematurity, birth asphyxia and infections are the main causes of death in the first month of life.

For adolescent girls, self-harm, maternal illness, road accidents, diarrheal diseases, and lower respiratory tract infections are the leading causes of death. In addition, depressive disorders related to self-harm and suicide are major problems at this age. Nutritional problems during childhood and adolescence can lead to overweight and obesity, which can increase the risk of premature death and disability in adulthood. Eating disorders, including anorexia nervosa, are very common among young girls. In addition, today, adolescent girls consume more tobacco and alcohol, which can harm their health and that of their future children.

For adult women of reproductive age, noncommunicable diseases are the leading causes of death and disability. In addition, prepartum and postpartum depression have serious repercussions for women and their children. They are also at higher risk of cancer and COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease). For cardiovascular diseases, there is evidence that women tend to be diagnosed and treated later than men, and less actively.

Finally, among women aged 60 and over, heart disease, stroke and chronic lung disease are the leading causes of death.

For all these reasons, ladies and gentlemen of all ages, it is important to take care of your health, for your present, your future and for your loved ones. Health is a precious thing that we tend to forget on a daily basis, and all our actions, whether good or bad, have repercussions later. You have many challenges to face on a daily basis, which can be exhausting, do not forget to think of yourself regularly. For this, a balanced diet, regular physical activity and a good immune system are the best allies of women's health . Early detection is of great importance both in the onset of diseases and their cure. Do not hesitate to take time for yourself, to relax, to do things that make you happy, to speak with a psychologist in order to soothe yourself internally if you feel the need.

Don't forget yourself!
